What is AI visibility, and why does it matter?

AI visibility is a simple idea with a growing amount of money riding on it: when someone asks an AI system for a recommendation in your industry, does it name your business, or someone else's?

That's it. Not where you rank. Not how much traffic you get. Whether, when a real buyer asks "who's a good granny flat builder in Padstow?" or "which accounting firm should I use for a growing business?", the AI answering them says your name. If it doesn't, you're not in the conversation at all, and you usually have no idea it's happening.

Why this is suddenly worth caring about

For twenty years, being findable online meant one thing: rank on Google. Get onto page one, ideally into the top three blue links, and you'd earn a share of the clicks. Everyone understood the game.

AI has quietly changed the game, and Google itself is leading the change. Google's AI Overview, the AI-written answer that now sits at the very top of the results page, appears on close to half of all searches. It reads across many sources, forms its own answer, and often names a specific handful of businesses as the recommendation, all before a single traditional blue link appears.

You can rank number one on Google and still be invisible, because the AI Overview sitting above your result never mentioned you.

Here's why that matters more than it first sounds. People trust the AI Overview. It's positioned as Google's own answer, and buyers increasingly treat the two or three names it lists as the shortlist, full stop. They don't scroll. They contact the businesses that got named and move on.

So if you're a granny flat builder and the AI Overview lists three builders for your area and you're not one of them, you haven't just lost a ranking. You've lost the chance to even be considered. You're not losing the quote. You're never getting in the room to give one.

It's not only Google

The same thing happens every time someone asks ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity instead of using a search bar at all, which more and more people now do for exactly these "who should I hire" questions. There's no page one to climb. The assistant either names your business or it doesn't. It's a yes or a no, and most businesses have never checked which one they're getting.

How AI visibility is different from SEO

Traditional SEO is about earning a position in a ranked list of links. AI visibility is about being the business an AI system is willing to name and cite in a written answer. They're related, and good SEO foundations still help, but they're not the same job.

Getting named by an AI depends on things like how clearly and consistently your business is described across the web, whether AI systems can confidently identify who you are and where you operate, and whether there's enough credible third-party signal for them to treat you as a real, trustworthy option worth recommending. A business can rank respectably on Google and still fail every one of those tests, which is exactly why so many end up invisible in AI answers without realising it.

The catch: you can't fix what you can't see

The reason AI visibility catches businesses off guard is that it's invisible by default. When you drop off page one of Google, you can at least go and look. When an AI Overview or ChatGPT simply doesn't mention you, nothing tells you it happened. There's no ranking to check, no drop to notice. The customer just quietly goes to a competitor the AI named instead.

That's why the first real step is always measurement: finding out, across the AI systems your customers actually use, whether you're being named, how often, and how that compares to your competitors. Once you can see it, you know whether there's a gap worth closing and where to start. Until you can see it, you're guessing.

Where this is heading

The share of buying decisions that start with an AI answer instead of a list of links is only growing. For most industries this is still early, which cuts both ways: the businesses that get visible in AI answers now are establishing themselves before their competitors even realise the shift is happening, while the ones that wait are handing that head start away. The question isn't whether AI visibility will matter to your business. It's whether you'll be one of the names it decides to recommend.
