What actually gets a business cited by AI

Once a business realizes it's not showing up in AI-generated answers, the next question is always the same: what actually makes the difference? The honest answer is that nobody, including the companies building these AI systems, has published an exact formula. But patterns are clear enough to act on.

This practice goes by a few different names depending on who you ask, Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), or just AI visibility. There's no settled industry consensus on the terminology yet, and in practice most people mean roughly the same thing by any of them: getting a business mentioned inside an AI-generated answer, not just ranked in a list of links.

Structured data does real work

AI systems favor information they can parse with confidence. Schema markup, the structured data embedded in a website that explicitly labels what a business is, where it's located, what services it offers, and what hours it keeps, gives an AI system exactly that kind of confident, unambiguous information. A website without it is asking the AI to guess. A website with it is handing over the answer directly.

FAQ content matters more than it used to

Because AI systems are answering questions, content written in a question-and-answer format tends to perform well, simply because it already matches the shape of what the AI is trying to produce. A page that directly answers "how much does X cost" or "how long does Y take" is far easier for an AI system to lift from than a page of general marketing copy that never quite states the answer plainly.

AI systems reward content that already looks like an answer. Vague marketing copy is easy to skip past.

Consistency across the web

AI systems cross-reference. A business whose name, services, and location are described consistently across its website, directories, and review platforms reads as more trustworthy than one with conflicting or outdated information scattered across the web. Inconsistency doesn't just look unprofessional, it actively makes an AI system less confident about citing you at all.

None of this is a one-time fix

AI systems update what they know constantly, and competitors are making these same changes too. Visibility isn't something to fix once and forget. It's closer to ongoing maintenance: check where you stand, close the gaps that show up, and check again.
