Why your Google ranking doesn't mean AI visibility

It's a reasonable assumption: if you've done the work to rank well on Google, you should be in good shape everywhere else too. Unfortunately, that's no longer how it works, and a lot of businesses are finding this out the hard way.

Traditional SEO and AI visibility are related, but they're not the same game, and they don't always move together.

Different systems, different rules

Google's classic ranking algorithm looks at things like backlinks, keyword relevance, page speed, and domain authority to decide what order to list websites in. It's essentially a sorting problem: given a search term, which pages are most relevant, and in what order should they appear.

An AI Overview, or an answer from ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity, works differently. These systems are trying to synthesize a direct answer to a question, and they draw on whichever sources give them the clearest, most structured, most quotable information to build that answer from. A page that ranks well but is written in dense marketing copy might get skipped entirely in favor of a lower-ranking competitor whose website has a clean FAQ section answering the exact question being asked.

Ranking well tells you Google's classic algorithm likes your page. It tells you nothing about whether an AI system trusts you enough to name you.

The gap this creates

This is why it's entirely possible, and increasingly common, for a business to hold a strong Google ranking while being almost completely absent from AI-generated answers. The two systems are evaluating different things, and optimizing for one doesn't automatically optimize for the other.

What actually helps on both fronts

The good news is that the fix isn't a separate, unrelated discipline. Clear structured data, genuine FAQ content that answers real customer questions, and consistent, accurate information about your business across the web all help with AI visibility specifically, while doing no harm to traditional SEO either. It's less about picking one over the other and more about recognizing that AI visibility needs its own deliberate attention rather than assuming it comes bundled with a good Google ranking.
