What is an AI Overview, really?

If you've searched Google recently, you've probably noticed something above the usual list of blue links: a paragraph or two, sometimes with a few bullet points, answering your question directly. That's an AI Overview, and it's now showing up on close to half of all Google searches.

It's not a summary of the top result. It's Google's own AI reading across many sources, forming an answer, and presenting it before a single website link ever appears on the page. For a lot of searches, that answer is the whole interaction. The person gets what they needed and never scrolls further.

Why this matters more than it sounds like it should

For years, the goal of being findable online was simple: rank on page one of Google, ideally in the top three results. An AI Overview changes that goal entirely. You can rank first on Google's traditional results and still be invisible, because the AI Overview sitting above those results didn't mention you at all.

When an AI Overview appears, a meaningful share of users never click through to any website at all. The answer already satisfied them.

That's the part most business owners haven't caught up to yet. Getting clicked on used to depend on where you ranked. Increasingly, it depends on whether an AI system decided you were worth mentioning by name.

It's not just Google

The same shift is happening every time someone asks ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity a question instead of typing it into a search bar. "Who's the best accounting firm for a growing business" is a question people now ask an AI assistant directly, and the assistant either names your business or it doesn't. There's no page one to rank on. There's just a yes or a no.

What to actually do about it

The first step is simply knowing where you stand. Most businesses have never checked whether AI systems mention them at all, let alone how that compares to their competitors. That visibility, once you have it, is what tells you whether there's a problem worth fixing, and where to focus first.
